Turn of the Breath: A Free Online Workshop

Facilitated by Heidi Muendel (MMus)

Dark ‘n’ Light took a deep dive into breath with a blog and a newsletter editorial by Susan Mathews exploring respiration, ecosystems, poetry and more. Eager to further experience Atemwende, the turn of breath, we invited Heidi Muendel (MMus), a professional opera singer and voice teacher with over 30 years’ experience, to conduct a workshop. This free open workshop was held, online, on 20th August, 2023.

In the workshop, which honoured the ‘whole’ self, Heidi shared her deep knowledge of breath, and practical exercises that facilitate authentic self-discovery. It was an hour of play, where participants were able to tap into a deeper alignment with the self through breath and sound. She took us, step by step, through familiar habits and practices to a space of gentle self-discovery. She emphasised the difference between using techniques and leaning into observation of what is already natural.

A moment from the workshop, where Heidi guided participants to notice that ephemeral space between an inhale and exhale.

Heidi shared insights about how we can each use breath to be mindful, to expand our physical and mental capacity and regulate our nervous systems. She guided us to notice and expand the spacious nothingness where breath turns and how we can expand that; how, through breath, we can change our own energy, as well as the energy we put out into the world. The exercises Heidi shared were simple and practical, leading to the point where a breath is held rather than where we’re holding our breath, weaving in a meditative energy into daily routines.

The participants were enthusiastic, excited and open to learn and let themselves be moved. Thank you to Heidi and to everyone who attended, and made the space so conducive to discovery.
